He was the son of Johann Adam Velten and Anna Maria Beilmann.1 
Marriage*Johann married Maria Eva Leyes, daughter of Jakob Leyes and Maria Eva Ruble, on 19 September 1843 in Reifenberg, Pirmasens, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.3 
Immigration*Adam immigrated from Germany to America, arriving 10 November 1852 at Port of New York, New York County, New York. He arrived on the ship Samuel M Fox out of Le Havre. He travelled with Jakob Ochs, eldest son of Heinrich Jakob Ochs. Adam left his family behind in Reifenberg until he established himself and could send for them, which he did in 1857.4 
Census 1860 - free*Adam was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census recorded 9 June 1860 in Ward 20, New York, New York County, New York. Eva Felten (given age 40), Mary Felten (given age 16), Jacob Felten (given age 14), Peter Velten (given age 12), Catherine Felten (given age 11), Margaret Felten (given age 9), Louisa Felten (given age 1) and Ann Felten (given age 1) were listed as household members. Adam lived with his family in New York, where he was employed as a tailor.5 
Mlt enlistment*During the Civil War, Johann Adam Velten signed up with Company C of the 7th New York Veteran Infantry Regiment on 22 July 1864 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, but was then transferred into Company A the same day, where he served about a year. At the time of his enlistment, the Army of the Potomac under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was engaged in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia and the 7th Regiment participated in numerous assaults and skirmishes around the city. This was the an important battle that cut off Confederate supply lines and cause Lee to abandon Petersburg and Richmond, leading to his eventual defeat at Appomattox. Adam was mustered out of the Army on 4 Aug 1865 at Hart's Island, NY Harbor, New York.6 
Naturalization*He petitioned the court to become a citizen on 21 October 1868 at Superior Court, located in New York, New York County, New York. At the time of naturalization, Adam lived at 126 Stanton Street in New York. His witness was Charles Hausman of 510 E. 14th Street.7 
Census 1870*Adam was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Ward 20, New York, New York County, New York, Adam and his family lived on w. 29th Street with his wife and two children. He was still employed as a tailor.8
