Mlt enlistment*During the Civil War, John Peter Dietrich signed up with Company G, Ohio 9th Infantry Regiment, initially serving as a musician on 27 May 1861 at Camp Dennison, located in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He saw action at Rich Mountain, Carnifax Ferry, Miller's Ferry, Mill Springs, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. He was mustered out on 7 Jun 1864.4 
Census 1870*John was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Springfield Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, John and his wife lived with their two children in Sycamore Township. John was employed as a cooper.5 
Census 1900*John Dietrich (given age 66) was listed as the head of household on the 1900 Census recorded 9 June 1900 in Reading, Hamilton County, Ohio. The official date of this census was 1 Jun 1900. Also living in the household were his wife, recorded as Anna Dietrich (given age 58), his sons, recorded as Albert Dietrich (given age 25), Hermann Dietrich (given age 19) and Andrew Dietrich (given age 11), his daughters, recorded as Theresa Dietrich (given age 27), Anastasia Dietrich (given age 17) and Amalia Dietrich (given age 15). John, his wife Anna, and six children lived in their own home on Walnut Street in Reading Village in Sycamore Township. John and Anna had been married for 41 years, and Anna reported she had 12 children, 8 of whom were still living. John worked at a manufacturer of mens's clothing. He reported he immigrated from Germany in 1855, and Anna immigrated in 1845 at age 3. Both were naturalized citizens.6 
Death*John died on 21 December 1904 in Reading, Hamilton County, Ohio, at age 71.7 
Burial*He was buried in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, located in Reading, Hamilton County, Ohio.7
