Biography*Living in Springfield, Missouri in 1904. Living on family farm in 1880, occupation listed as peddler. 1910 census shows living in Springfield with family. 1910 Springfield city directory shows occupation as grocer, F. Simmons & Co., 1150 Boonville. 1911 directory shows Julia continuing business at 475 E. Harrison, 1912-1913 at 638 W. Commercial, and 1915 lists no Julia Simmons. 1920 census shows Julia living in Kansas City at 3304 E. 14th St. Daughter Rose has married Eugene W. Evans.

Birth2Conflicting evidence states that Frank was born on 23 September 1857 in Kansas. Frank's tombstone clearly gives his date of birth as September 23, 1857. This conflicts with a birthday of September 3 on his death certificate provided by his wife as informant.2

The official date of this census was 15 Apr 1910. Also living in the household were his wife, recorded as Julia A. Simmons (given age 49), his sons, recorded as Fred Simmons (given age 10) and Ralph Simmons (given age 8), his daughters, recorded as Lena Simmons (given age 13) and Helen Simmons (given age 4). Ralph and Julia were listed as married for 15 years with four living children. They reside at 1150 Boonville Street where Frank ran a retail grocery store.6

Biography*Rich Velten was born in South St.Louis in June of 1945. He attended St. Louis Public Schools and graduated from Southwest High School in 1963. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated with a degree in Engineering. Rich spent his working career as an engineer with McDonnell Douglas and other engineering firms. He was a registered Professional Engineer.


In 1969 he married Marilyn Vogel and they celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 2019. He was a wonderful father to Mike and Scott Velten. Rich was a den leader and Cubmaster while the boys were in Cub Scouts. Scott Velten married Katharine Martin in 2014.


Rich served as an Alderman in the City of Ballwin for 8 years and was a founding member of the Ballwin Days Committee. He served as president of the West St. Louis County Jaycees and was given the prestigious JCI Senator award.


His passionate hobby was Model Trains. He was a member of the Model Railroaders at the National Museum of Transportation and a major contributor to the Holiday Model Railroad display. He also drove the antique trolleys and maintained the gates for the Museum Railroad. He was a member of the Boeing Railroad Club, past president and former treasurer of the Kirkwood Railroad Association, and was the current treasurer of the Gateway Division of the National Model Railroad Association.
