Donald V. VanGordon, 86
Served with U.S. Navy as WWII fighter pilot


CHATHAM - Donald V. VanGordon, 86, a longtime resident of Chatham, who died July 29 at Mayflower Place Nursing Care Center in West Yarmouth.
     Mr. VanGordon was born, raised and educated in Rahwey, N.J. He interrupted his college education to serve with the U.S. Navy in WWII as a fighter pilot.
     He flew a dive bomber on the USS Cowpens in the Solomon Islands and was a fighter pilot on the USS Yorktown. He was also called up to active duty in the Korean war, serving as a jet fighter pilot on the USS Antietam.
     Mr. VanGordon flew more than 250 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, several Air Medals and numerous campaign decorations, retiring with the rank of Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy.
     He ultimately graduated from Rutgers University, married Leona Wolven and settled in New Jersey, working as an engineer in ceramics manufacturing. He moved to Chatham in 1978 after he retired, and moved to West Yarmouth in 2004.
     A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mayflower Place Retirement Center, 579 Buck Island Road, West Yarmouth.
     Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, where he will be buried with military honors.
     Memorial donations may be sent to the Donald and Leona VanGordon Scholarship Fund c/o The Union County College Foundation, 1033 Springfield Ave., Cranford, N.J.
 
Burial*He was buried on 11 October 2006 in Massachusetts National Cemetery, located in Bourne, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.2,5
